Now Star Wars is known by nearly everyone on the I’m Silently Correcting Your Grammar I’m Silently Correcting Your Grammar T-Shirt also I will do this planet while Damnation Alley is pretty much only remembered in trivia as the movie that inspired Radroaches and Radscorpions in the Fallout series, and for being the source of the controllable tank unit name in Star Fox. The name of the vehicle on Damnation Alley’s poster is called The Landmaster, the same name as the tank in Star Fox. These executives grew up with movies like The Searchers and Ben Hur. Star Wars wasn’t like anything they’d ever seen and did not understand it one bit. The original trailer was hot garbage. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher snuck into the first movie that had the trailer to see it, and after the narrator said “coming to your galaxy this summer” some wiseass said “and it’s coming to daytime TV two weeks after that”.

And worse was that the I’m Silently Correcting Your Grammar I’m Silently Correcting Your Grammar T-Shirt also I will do this original cut of the film was absolutely panned. The editing team fixed it after the first screening. It went from garbage to a classic, and history was made after people initially evaluated it. The story of Star Wars’ success is one of “a team of plucky young actors and filmmakers create a classic out of the mess their ‘visionary’ director made”. I heard Lucas and his wife were still re-editing it until the eleventh hour because the original cut was horrible. Perhaps this early version is the one the execs saw when they made their decision. It’s because it was titled incorrectly. ‘Tarnation Fallacy’ instead of Damnation Alley would have beat such a poignantly simple ‘Star Wars’ at the box office.
