It makes perfect sense though, ill disciplined armies descend into chaos at the I’m not missing i’m just fishing man T-Shirt moreover I will buy this end of a battle/part way through a campaign, even if they’re winning. Because each soldier wanted his share of loot (his only real payment) and couldn’t risk missing out. The Romans had a system of fair division of loot so the troops didn’t have the same fear of ‘missing out’ and maintained discipline until the end, in the unshakeable knowledge their officers wouldn’t rip them off.
