When I’m anywhere in Scandinavia I just start speaking English right away, it makes things so nice as a traveler. Germany I would have assumed that everyone spoke English as it is the I’m Multitasking I Can ListenIgnore and Forget All At The Snoopy shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this economic center of Europe but it seems about 30% maybe (definitely higher in younger as you say) I think in countries where everyone learns English in school, asking if someone speaks English almost comes off the same as asking someone if they can do math. Like, yea no shit I can, I went to school. So I can see how it might not go over well. I’m with your friend for the most part. Most of the time I’ve found people peg me for being a tourist pretty quickly. Often just from how I dress. So they’re prepped for it in some way, sometimes they start in English before I do. Even saying hello in whichever language feels like I get picked out pretty quick not having the accent or quite right pronunciation. Almost always if it’s a store/museum/restaurant they speak English to some degree and it’s fine. If they don’t speak it they’ll let you know. English is just the language of tourism at this point. Something people forget too is if you’re traveling with someone and they hear you talking in English or not their language odds are they know what’s coming.

The exception being if I’m not in a touristy area, often a very small town, then I’ll ask. Or if I stopped somebody on the I’m Multitasking I Can ListenIgnore and Forget All At The Snoopy shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this street, which is extremely rare. I usually start in Urdu. After a few sentences I’ll then say “or we could use English if you prefer.” Never fails. yeah, if you don’t mind acting like an american stereotype- go ahead. if you do: learn basic things like hello/thanks/etc before you start asking in english I usually just start speaking it. If they don’t speak English they’ll let me know. If I’m interrupting a strangers day I want the process to be as streamlined as possible. I don’t know how rude it is, but it’s presumptive at a minimum. If they don’t speak English it’s just now an awkward encounter you have to exit from. You’re not giving the other person a lot of options and if they don’t speak English you just dismiss them or what? Well it’s either them asking if they speak English and they say no, or they say something in english and they say no english. So sorta the same outcome. And with that outcome I would just say thank you and move on. I actually had a few tourists come up to me in Italy and France and ask things in the local language and I was like sorry english, they either then spoke English or went sorry and moved on. Didn’t bother me. But I do think it depends where you are in the world, the french would hate this but Germans would probs not care in my experience.
