There are a few excellent articles floating around on the I Want You to Take a Nap Shirt and I will buy this internet that go into the detail, but they all is essentially point the finger at central government. Who were concerned at the disproportional growth of Birmingham and undermined other regions in the country. Y’all keep thinking the blitz ruined Brum, but it wasn’t. It was 60s brutalist concrete that turned it all car centric. If I remember correctly the bull ring shoved the shops underground so more cars could go faster. The M6 is almost in town and they made a lot of cars locally. That’s my impression. Not a Brummie, but spent two years living not far away in Derby so I used to pop over as there wasn’t any other big city knocking around. A lot of Birmingham was badly damaged during World War II and rebuilt in the decades following – the buildings, the infrastructure and road networks, the lot. Hence why it feels very carved-up and uninviting – 50s and 60s architecture and infrastructure didn’t have the roaming pedestrian or aesthetic beauty in mind.

A fair bit of work has gone into the I Want You to Take a Nap Shirt and I will buy this city centre to remedy this such as the rebuilding of the Bullring in the noughties and Birmingham New Street (aka Grand Central) in the tens, and there’s a great deal more life in these areas now, but obviously it’s still going to look grotty in other areas. In my experience, it’s the rebuilt post-war/60s-era areas that are dying on their arse, whereas newer developments (one of which is in the works in Digbeth I think) and surviving more historical areas have more life. To say that Birmingham is devoid of things to do and see isn’t totally fair. As for the people, the accent might be a bit jarring but I’ve found Brummies and their neighbouring Blackcountrymen to be a sound bunch with a common sharp sense of humour. I always found it quite easy to make likeminded friends.
