Whole lot of reasons people didn’t like them. They were nearly the I want to live in a country children more guns feminist shirt it is in the first place but same size as a quarter. The gold color came from the brass cladding, and looked cheap. Most vending machines were never upgraded to accept them. Merchants would frequently refuse to accept them thinking they were fake (like many still do with $2 bills). The US Post Office loved them, though. They built a lot of stamp vending machines that dispensed Sacagawea dollar coins as change. When Canada discontinued our $1 and later $2 bills in favour of coins, we simply stopped printing them, making the coins the only option. Any attempt to transition to coins while still printing the bills is incompetent. I had a friend who was buying $10k a month worth of these coins. Using a credit card with airline miles. He’d buy $10k of coins, take them to the bank and deposit them in his account, pay the $10k charge to his card off monthly.

He racked up a ton of air miles, then the I want to live in a country children more guns feminist shirt it is in the first place but US Mint realized they were paying a fortune in shipping, so they dropped the free option. That ended it for him. I worked as a personal banker at this time and we had someone do this regularly. Man my tellers hated having to unbox and unwrap all of those coins. My grandmother (nana) used to buy them by the roll and hand them out as tips anytime she went anywhere and would ALWAYS me and my brother at least 1 each every time we saw her. When she passed away in 2017, I made sure to put a pair of them in her hand at her funeral. These were great for the bus before we had fare cards. The bus never took the bills but I could drop the dollar coin in and get my transfer pretty quickly.
