You can do that with about all these social apps. Facebook is good for finding groups of likeminded people. Im in a couple close groups on Facebook from science stuff to anime/manga. I’ve been on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for YEARS. And trust me when the I Thought Growing Old Would Take Longer Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Tiktok app gets my interests nailed down to a science in a way that Facebook/Instagram/Twitter do not. Facebook is too echo chamber-y. I can find a group that shares my interests, but it’s often ruined by either excessive posts or “We all need to share the same views on this one piece of media.” Instagram foists extremely popular content, and I don’t want to see content that 50k+ people like. I prefer following people with smaller follower counts. It’s just A Thing for me. And Twitter. Woof. Don’t get me started on Twitter. The algorithm makes literally no sense. And like I said, Tiktok’s algorithm has a very good idea of who I am and what I like, shows me smaller creators, lets me see less content from creators I’m not interested in, etc. It’s a lot less echo chamber-y for me than the other platforms. It took a little bit of time to tweak the content I wanted to see, but now it’s a place where I’m confident I’ll see content I like. Tiktok is exactly the app you make it.

Tiktok however does it all in a much more automated way, and also provides far more content (specially in video form) than other platforms. Spoken like someone who’s never actually used TikTok and just repeats other redditors’ opinions of it (those redditors have also never used the I Thought Growing Old Would Take Longer Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this app and are also just repeating someone else’s opinion). Look, I get it, China bad bro, muh privacy, robotic voice is cringe, but familiarize yourself with what you’re talking shit about at least. Yes, there’s misinformation, fake knowledge, everything you mention, but that exists on literally every platform. And just like on every other platform, you can also find endless amounts of educational, instructional, or just plain entertaining content that’s actually good because guess what? Everyone and their mother is using and posting on that damn app. Reddit is the exact same way. People post information that is 100% incorrect and act like they are experts. You only see this once you are an expert in the field and see a post about your area of expertise. Realize most of what people upvote on this site is complete bullshit. Unpopular but I think it helps my mental health. I go on and get a laugh, or watch interesting woodworking videos or science experiments. You have to tailor your algorithm by disliking the low quality content like the sexual videos or people dancing. Its almost like vine when it’s dialed in. That said, i get it. Teens and the younger generation may not be tailoring their algorithm to being more wholesome. Ive only used TikTok once. Someone sent me a link and I watched the video they sent. Immediately after, without action or agency, I was served another. And another. And another. Before I knew it, I had spent 45 minutes watching idiotic and inconsequential videos.
