Then explain they didn’t seem to take you seriously, since it was such a low offer. If they need you they can make a different offer. This is a clear example of a company not negotiating in good faith. My old company had a policy that the HR department got a yearly bonus based entirely on how many (tens of) thousands they ‘saved’ the company by shaving starting salaries. Needless to say it ensured that we got a steady supply of desperate, aggrieved workers who were not very good or motivated at their jobs. Make sure you include everybody who interviewed you in your rebuttal, The one in which you stick to your guns and insist on the originally promised salary. Make sure this isn’t just HR or the recruiter lowballing you and keeping everyone else out of the loop. Ensure every person in the company whose time got wasted interviewing you knows that you are being lowballed. Maybe you can help prevent the next candidate from suffering the same fate. Accept the offer and then don’t show up for the 1st day instead send in a letter rescinding your acceptance. Fuck them!! Unless you are in the position that you are still financially stable without a job, I would still take the position. I would just take it while applying to other companies in the meantime. A job is better than no job! In defence of the company, just because you’ve told them what you want, if they feel your skills and experience don’t merit the higher salary then it’s their decision on what they offer.
