There are some people whose brains have a harder time learning languages and if it’s not absolutely necessary or unavoidable they won’t learn it properly. You can watch all movies and shows in a dubbed version in Germany. I was able to reply, in Dutch, “Het spijt me, ik spreek geen nederlands. Sprekt u engels?” I swear that cashier’s jaw dropped. He replied, “well, you can’t say you speak no Dutch, because that was really, very good! Also, I was asking if you needed a bag.” When he later asked me where I was from and I told him I’m an American, his jaw dropped even further.
