Germany needs to add more than 10 GW per year in the I just want to work in my garden and hangout with my dog T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this future to achieve the coal exit by 2030. That’s much more than the all time record in 2017. But it’s doable. I don’t think many people like to admit that as stupid and damaging Brexit is/was, it is not nearly as bad or shortsighted as Germany’s decision to turn away from nuclear power. Since the start of the German Atomausstieg (nuclear exit) in 2002, France reduced its nuclear power output more than Germany. Lulz indeed! France is decommissioning 14 (that’s the highest number I could find, glad you got to 30 though, very impressive!) for maintenance and a gradual move to renewables (they also are planning to close down their last coal plants, that must be scary!), while Germany closed down *all * their reactors because they are checks notes scared? Embrace the glowing rocks!

Just imagine how much faster this transition could have been achieved if the I just want to work in my garden and hangout with my dog T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this nuclear plants had been allowed to continue to run… Or if we would have started 40 years ago. Also, people who supported nuclear historically have also been the same people saying renewables don’t work or we don’t need them. How do you know it would have been faster (or even possible at all)? We only know one fact: In previous years, when nuclear power plants were still online, the share of renewables was smaller and the share of coal was higher. How do you know that renewables would have been installed at the same pace if they had to compete with nuclear power plants? How do you know that renewables would have been installed at the same pace if they had to compete with nuclear power plants? What Germany really should have been doing was urgently exiting coal. Then there still would have been an energy deficit to make up for with renewables. Shutting down existing, (essentially) emission-free energy sources like nuclear instead of shutting down existing, high-emission energy sources like coal is just straightforwardly a bad idea when it comes to climate change. Here come the bitter nukebros who pretend to give a shit about climate change just so that they can take an opposing position to the “Greens”.
