As a child I was blindsided by it but as I got older it really hit me how those kids who wouldn’t come in their own clothes for own clothes day (we wore a uniform) their parents probably couldn’t afford the few £‘s it cost them & projects like baking etc we’d pay a small cost to take them home & those kids wouldn’t get to take home or even TASTE what they had made & instead they got given to the church for after service refreshments. Huh..? Paying to get what MY CHILD painted at school? Can’t he just take his OWN painting home, otherwise its straight up robbery I hate this but also this is what we get when we don’t fund schools. These teachers are probably buying school supplies with their own money. It’s fucked. I get wanting to raise money for things but this certainly comes from a place of privilege if they think everyone can donate money every month for art work and costumes.

When I was in elementary school we had to buy recorders for music class, and buying it was mandatory. How can purchasing something be mandatory? Such a weird way to do it. My sons school just sells random snacks and treats every week. He’s all excited for next week because he can buy popcorn for $2. I’m sorry what? You have to pay for their artwork and to wear a costume?! This is absurd, I don’t even have kids and this pisses me off. My school made us pay to wear casual clothes one day, so I get the I Can’t Go On Need A Snack Please And Thank You Possum Weird Shirt so you should to go to store and get this costume thing. But paying for your kids art project. WTF? I would be pissed as a parent. I saw the costume paper and thought OP was being overdramatic and reaching but the art one, my jaw literally dropped. If a kid sneaks their fingerpainting into their bag, do they call the cops? Is there a patdown on the way out to make sure no contraband art is being smuggled out? I would be raising hell with the school principal and administration. My kid’s art belongs to my kid, and my kid shouldn’t have to pay to wear a Halloween costume. Ok, I come from a not so big area myself (maybe 500 in my elementary school?) but this is highway robbery, and actually disgusting! I can understand having to pay for some things, like school photos, or art I made in elementary school being turned into a magnet (I still have it up on my fridge 😀 ) but if it’s already made by the kid? No, that should automatically be theirs. THEY MADE IT, THEY GET IT. Same for costumes. What the hell am I paying for? For your party? No, the kid can dress up if they want! What are you going to do, ban them? “That’ll show em to never come to school and enjoy themselves unless they pay!” Like what!? I cannot fathom such stupidity, even if you are a super super small school…
