There is a lot of physical and emotional abuse that goes on in right wing households that’s framed as “toughening up” and “character building.” You see a reserved kid with downcast eyes with a clearly conservative (ideologically, they’re not shy about it) presenting father or mother in public, odds are very high that kid has gotten hit at least once, often for something incredibly trivial. And yet, they’ll proudly brag they brought up kids with good morals and character. If your kid can’t behave unless there’s a threat of violence, that’s a kid who will figure out later how to not get caught. They don’t have a moral compass, they have a fear of the I Am The Wicked Witch Of Everything Spider Halloween T-Shirt but in fact I love this lash. I grew up in a conservative household so I know there is truth there. A lot of conservatives have rough upbringings. Upbringings that do not promote kids to turn out healthy emotionally. They figure if they can survive then anyone can survive. Just ignore the mental health crisis, poor people starving or substaining on the worst foods because it’s cheap and all of that. Basically, they just forget that they are one of the few exceptions rather than the rule.

Took me too long to realize I was one of such people. Now I try to stand up to such a things, even tho it gets me lot of “hate” back. I do love me some dark humour, But I cannot in good conscience ever make hateful joke for sake of the I Am The Wicked Witch Of Everything Spider Halloween T-Shirt but in fact I love this joke itself, unless it’s in presence of just few people that I know are not filled with unfounded anger and hatred like so many seem to be… Because that’s a very sad projection that only tells me that you were bullied and abused and assume everyone is. Or this is a person who lacks empathy and is trying to minimize the real bullying and abuse that some people have suffered by likening it to the run-of-the-mill challenges that we all face in life.
