My youngest will try anything. He may hate it, but he’ll try it. Then, he’ll ask for a bite of yours. He just hated his, but he wants yours. Somehow, he loves yours. His is disgusting, yours is yummy. TBF, white rice and steak is pretty tasty. My kid only eats chicken and pork, though, and spits out rice and any spaghetti-like pasta. What’s all the I Am The Best Thing My Wife Ever Found On The Internet T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this hype now is Division in Responsibility in Feeding. I decide what is served, I decide when we eat, I decide where it is eaten. However my child is responsible for deciding what on his plate to eat and how much he wants to eat. Each meal consists of three elements. Likes, Loves and Learning. Loves is something the child consistently eats and enjoys to eat. Likes is something the kid is less fond of, but has no aversion towards. Learning is either an unfamiliar food or a food they are “Learning to like” (aka doesn’t like). There is never enough love-food to just eat love food, but there is always enough food to sustain yourself without touching the Learning-food. Now this sounds complex but it’s not. For example my son’s evening meal. It was an almond butter sandwich with apple wedges and cucumber slices. My son loves apples, he likes sandwiches but would prefer if he only got apple. He’s not a fan of cucumber. He’s 2yo old. He can do whatever he wants with that food. Not throw it on the floor or walls of course, but he can investigate it as he pleases, he can nibble it, he can chew and spit out, he can lick it and he can decide not to eat it at all. I’ll ask him “Are you finished?” or remind him “You’re going to bed after this, so once you’re done, you’re done.” but never force him to taste anything or make him eat. I have no way of knowing if he’s still hungry or not. I just need to trust that he knows. Of course this means that some days he hardly eats anything and other days he eats more than me, but over all he’s a decent eater.

The goal with this approach isn’t that everyone on this earth must love Brussels sprouts, but that everyone has a functional diet. Aka a diet where they get all their major nutrients from the I Am The Best Thing My Wife Ever Found On The Internet T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this food they eat, that they don’t learn to habitually overeat or that they are so anxious around food or eat so few things that they can’t eat at a friend’s house and not find so many elements in that plate of food that it can allow them to eat enough to sustain themselves to the next meal. It is frustrating to toss out Learning-food for weeks, but I see progress. My son wouldn’t touch his cucumber. Then he started to lift it into the “don’t want-bowl” himself. Then he discovered he could stick his finger through the seeds and he had a tonne of fun with that. Then he started to lick the cucumber. Then he would chew it but spit it out. We’re at a stage where he consistently chews his cucumber and about 50/50 whether he swallows or spits it out. He’ll get there with the cucumber. He just needs more time.
