I’ve been in this situation before and I think you’re pretty much screwed even if you get everything in writing. They’re really just buying time until they find a real replacement but it’s cheaper than your old boss a little bit more money than you but with a lot more experience. You’re basically just a holdover for now but let’s say you do succeed in the role, you might get a marginal raise but it won’t be until you are fully knee deep into the role and that you proven yourself all the while with the outs the pay increase. And let’s say you do succeed and are good at the role It will be definitely less pay than your old boss so the company wins either way this is a very strategic move on their part. For you it.. doesn’t matter to them if you end up succeeding then they’ve actually saved some money if you fail then they didn’t cost any more money for them. You might as well start looking for a new job.
