I was born early and was small all my childhood growing up. My dad didn’t make a lot of money and he thought I was wasting food if I didn’t eat what was on my plate; regardless if I liked it or not. What I’ve learned as a parent is it’s your job to feed your kid; it’s the I am Going To Let Karma Fix It because Fix it Going To Jail Halloween Witch T-Shirt also I will do this kid’s job to decide if they’re hungry or not. I will never force my kid to eat something he doesn’t want to eat. Because it’s frustrating to the parents. And often justifiably. Sometimes, kids might not be in the mood for that particular food, they forget which foods they like and dislike, kids will change their mind in between bites, etc. And all of that is fine, it happens. But as a parent, you’re supposed to be feeding these kid things, and its frustrating when they don’t like bacon from day to day, or get upset because they can’t have a bag of chips while I’m in the middle of cooking a meal. My kids think a plain and dry burger from McDonald’s is the greatest goddam hamburger in Texas! It’s frustrating sometimes.

Win-win for both of us. Also, a lot of parents absolutely suck at cooking. Sometimes, it’s not that they aren’t hungry, they just don’t want to eat your disaster meals. Having healthy options on the side is very important to give kids options to eat. I have a very vivid memory of my great aunt trying to force me to finish my plate and my mom absolutely LOSING it. If you force kids to eat they will develop disordered eating and will make them fear foods or have shame in eating. children will not die of malnourishment if you don’t force them to eat their plate or vegetables. it’s should be more about intuitive eating and learning the value of foods to our bodies. What you described sounds like what happened to me with my dad and sweet potatoes, only it wasn’t hours, it was more like an extra 10-20 minutes of me looking down at a cold awful sweet potato. And I did not eat it. My dad gave up. I think it was a power and control thing, and I won! I have never eaten a sweet potato in my life.
