Yup. Becoming more and more common in my field for the I am a simple woman like softball and wine flower shirt In addition,I will do this standard notice period for both sides to be 3 months. My organisation recently sent out an email asking if existing employees would be willing to update their contracts from a 1 month notice period for both parties to the “increasingly common industry standard practise of a 3 month notice period”. I declined. Of course there are exceptions. If the boss and you both agree to terminate effective immediately, there’s a form for that. It’s just not the standard. How does that work then? The new job has to wait 3 months before you can start? Or do you have to give notice and hope tou find somewhere in that tine period… In my experience new employers are accustomed to notice periods. So they will offer the role with the understanding that it will be a 1-3 month wait for the new employee to start.

It would mean I breached my contract, which is an offense in its own, and I won’t get my holiday pay, or a good reference! (That’s a line US high school principals used when I was growing up to scare students into behaving. It’s all bullshit.) In my job its 1 month, and after 10 years its 2 months. If i got fired it would currently be 6 weeks, and after 2 years its 2 months and it increases by a month every 5th year of seniority in the sector. I think the correct response is “It costs a lot to hire new employees. They should have thought about the costs of doing that before being a sub-par employer” Hit ‘em with the “The costs to the company is the company’s concern, and my decision is based upon factors concerning my own benefit.” If you really want to drive the point home, add on the old “The company was clearly more concerned with their immediate capacity to increase profit than they were with the concerns of the ones maintaining that capacity for profit, hence my departure.” Won’t you please think of the owner class. They simply cannot afford to both pay for labor and the necessities of life… Things such as vacations monthly , private school for their children, expensive cars, designer clothes and a second home. “Maybe this is an opportunity to improve, this company now may realise it needs to develop its talent retention. A constructive opportunity to improve, you are welcome”
