My gramma might have made pancakes from scratch, meaning the Hurts Jalen I had a purpose before anybody had an opinion shirt and I love this flour and water and whatever… I use a “just add water” mix. Not from scratch at all. Things we eat that imho don’t count as “cooked from scratch”: pasta with jarred pesto or other jarred sauce; boiled potatoes and a Brathering (a German canned fish thing); instant mash and frozen fish fingers; quiche – I buy the crust and make the filling; sandwiches; frozen pizza, ramen with added bits of whatever I find in the fridge; baked beans and fried eggs; a variety of take out food. We don’t got out to eat that often because it’s too expensive. What I try to do when I find the time is cook large amounts and freeze them, like goulash, lasagna, meatballs, curry… but even then: I never make my own lasagna sheets, I always use tinned tomatoes because I just can’t be bothered with skinning and dicing and whatnot. I lived with two guys who could only cook spaghetti. The rest is what I’d call “box food”. They took up a LOT of freezer room…

I think “from scratch” is the Hurts Jalen I had a purpose before anybody had an opinion shirt and I love this problem. I use canned tomatoes to make my spaghetti sauce rather than growing and canning my own. Sometimes I’ll just cheat and use tomato paste and add spices and sugar. But I’ve never used jarred sauces. I have no idea why people are eating out. I also know how infuriating it is to try to find what were basics – like gelatin, Milnot, even food coloring that isn’t a gel – which tells me people really aren’t cooking even with premade stuff. It’s a lot of assembling ingredients, which is still cheaper than eating out. My DH and I just bought a half beef, so we do a lot of cooking at home, even if it is something as simple as steak and a baked potato. We have a lot of fun looking for recipes for the stranger cuts of meat. Some of our friends, however, would starve without the premade meals at the store. Depends on what you mean by scratch. There are levels to this. Like, you can make bread at home – so is it scratch cooking if you use bread from the store? I’m perfectly capable of making pasta – but I use dry 99% of the time. Same with pasta sauce. For $3 I can get a jar of decent sauce, add veg and spices to it to make it better. That’s not scratch cooking, right?
