The conversations are often trollish in nature. Probably because the Hunter X Hunter Gon and Killua Anime shirt but in fact I love this slang is associated with 4chan, PoliticalCompassMemes, and meme subreddits. That was my original interpretation and how I use it in general, before it got more meta connotations as all slang does No. Someone can be based and be an asshole at the same time. People are often considered assholes for emphatically going against the mainstream. Thing it’s hard to understand in english? Now try to imagine how difficult it is to explain why, in spanish, people started using “basado”. Similar to the word lit, based is now used outside of its drug related context to mean something has gained their approval. Opposite of “biased”, kind of. If anything, “biased in a positive, correct direction.” It supposedly comes from the name of the rapper Lil B The Based God. I guarantee you had some dumb ass slang when you were a kid growing up lol. Every generation has their thing, this is just one of them and honestly is probably one of the better slang terms that has come about seeing how positive and uplifting it is. At least people understood what we were saying, I’ve seen so many different explanations of what based means, and nobody can seem to agree on anyone explanation. It’s just stupid.

So imagine everyone in society said that eating excess sugar is good for you. If you even slightly disagree with them you’d be labeled as a hater and denier. Even though you’d be ridiculed for it, you still know that the Hunter X Hunter Gon and Killua Anime shirt but in fact I love this general public is wrong. So by saying what you know to be true without any hesitation of backlash would be considered based. I think the word emerged with the rise of the internet where people ridicule others all the time even when they’re wrong. That’s why the term “based” has gained popularity imo. Oh wow, I learned something today. I always assumed it was a negative thing because it sounds like basic. Idk where they come up with this shit but definitely making me feel old as a millennial. I feel like it was only yesterday when people were saying “tru” lol guess it’s just the same thing.
