That elevated the scare factor a lot. But once it was time? There were several indications that it was finally time. The morning of, he’d stopped communicating altogether. Myself, everyone’s siblings, my uncle and grandma and cousins all went to the hospital together after hearing he’d stopped communicating. My uncle and grandma went to see him first and in the waiting room my great-aunt and I didn’t exactly say the words, “today’s the day” but we made the agreement we would each be holding one of their hands the whole time. I managed to speak one-on-one with my uncle in the hallway and the convo ended along the lines of, he’d be ashamed of us all if we didn’t at least go out together on the rare instance everyone got together.

And yeah. That was it. My uncle and grandma decided it was time and he passed peacefully later that day. I held my grandma’s hand as he went and my great-aunt held my uncle’s hand, just as we agreed to do. Everyone took all the Hold this L Britain Captain George Washington shirt besides I will buy this time they needed to say goodbye and when everyone was ready we all went to dinner together and had a good time for him. We laughed, we cried, we had fun, we made memories, we shared memories, we hugged, those of us who hadn’t seen each other since forever and a half ago exchanged numbers, we cried some more. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. He had explicitly written out what he wanted to happen if he ever got to that point of not being able to do anything for himself and that’s what they did. Knowing he wouldn’t have had anything different is what gave me peace. That knowledge in itself erased the last month of fear and worry over doing the right thing. All that fear goes away when you realize that no matter what you say, don’t say, do or don’t do, it’s going to happen anyway. Grief is just the visitor that overstays the welcome only until you realize you’re ready to move on. I’m still dealing with my grief but it is much easier to handle when you’re at peace
