You have to get enough people to agree with you that will do drastic measures like walkouts and strikes if things don’t change. That’s always a challenge since many people are more of the Hitchcock’s Psycho The Good Boy Loves His Brother Shirt but in fact I love this mind that that can just jump ship to another job or even move to a new city. From there, you use your bargaining power to hold companies in line. The idea that if they don’t give you guys what you want, then they suddenly lose everybody or the work stops. I hate to be a cynic, but I’ve seen so many in white collar positions talk about starting unions, and yet the unfortunate reality is that there’s too many people who seriously believe it’s easier to find a new job or even move to a new city than to be part of a union. I think what made unions work in the past was that these were workers that didn’t have a lot of options, so they couldn’t just jump ship so easily. Plus, they knew where they could go with the job, so they needed a means to have power. When you can easily go find a new job, a promotion, a raise, then it’s not going to be in your best interest to pay dues and be part of a union.

What I would love to see happen is more calling out. Just at some level where suddenly there’s resources where people are calling out companies who treat workers badly, pay them badly, play games, and thus the Hitchcock’s Psycho The Good Boy Loves His Brother Shirt but in fact I love this considered effort is to basically make it incredibly difficult for this company to find talent. Even more so, when they try sleight of hand means to lay people off without shareholders knowing, they go all out to make sure shareholders know so their stock value price goes down. To your last point, I’ve already seen that work for a few companies and it should definitely be commonplace imo Oh, I agree completely. I think we’ll be slowly fucked on pay over time because of how great a gig it is and how overly saturated the new grad market is. I ll give you an example of another country where unions are not popular (in tech but then they contoll most fields) but here in Argentina we can get x3 or even more if the company has clients in other countrys than if we join an union. In other field I had an union for 5 years and they don’t do things , yeah some people actually had good intentions and fought for employees but most of them not. Our country is destroyed by a lot of unions, maybe you have good intentions but in the long run if they get popularity and power you ll regreat it so bad. Companies employ far less when you have lots of unions , it benefits low performance so everything goes slower too , some people may enjoy it but other just likes to code , I could describe a lot of scenarios where they help but most of the time they just don’t when they become large.
