Where? What industry? Tech is a brand new industry and isn’t widely unionized, this thread is about how to form a union, keep up. Boeing has a union for software engineering jobs. Sounds like you aren’t as familiar with actual software unions as I am, and you’ve just swallowed propaganda. Let me guess, you’ve barely been in the industry, got brainwashed in college and don’t have much professional experience? I can’t say what the ‘average’ is, but I have an old coworker who worked at Boeing and it was horrible, the pay was shit, people got mad at you if you completed your projects too fast, and it was basically a place to coast with a meager salary. I suppose if you want to work for peanuts and have no stress about getting fired or laid off for performance reasons it might bet better than average, but if you care about money or actually shipping software then you could make 4x as much at Amazon or other places. I’m not in this industry at all. But I see lots of software people bemoaning layoffs while at the same time being happy to shoot themselves in the foot and pretend they’re badass software mercenaries. Ok, so you have no real world experience and have no idea what you’re talking about. Meanwhile you have someone here with tons of experience and know people who have worked at union shops in software…

Ok buddy. I’m glad you’re really sure of yourself after your brainwashing and your google search. Solid research. The other thing is that his company pays far more than other nearby companies, has better benefits & more PTO (double what most other companies are offering). This is because they can’t have a huge disparity between union and non-union roles. I have no idea why you’d jump to that conclusion. Have you ever negotiated anything other than your own salary? What’s to be brainwashed over? Union jobs pay more than non-union ones, and software jobs have not been around long enough to be widely unionized, especially in the Hal Roach Studios Shirt and I will buy this current environment. Which part of that do you want to correct? Having more job security also means that the shitty employees are less likely to be let go. It’s a double edged sword and if you’re good at your job, it makes more sense to bet on yourself. If it is true that they pay better – the increase might justify the fees. The increase would have to significantly outweigh the fees though, obviously If you’re lucky that is, some unions get to fast-track friends and family for promotion while anyone without a connection is left out to dry.
