I’d also add that there are some bars now that are offering really legit, interesting non-alcoholic drinks, like the Hickory Crawdads Baseball shirt also I will do this ones made with Seedlip. Again, not that you have to. Food is fine. But if you ever wanted to make it look like you were drinking something, when you’re not, that might be an option. I don’t always drink when I go to hangout at the bar but I’m always at a table with high tabs and yes I tip generously for non alcohol drinks. In short, of course, just understand the bartender makes money from tips, and you are taking a seat that could be a tipping, drinking customer. If you get food that probably covers the cost of 3ish drinks right there so you’re even for at least an hour and a half. If you hang around longer without spending money, maybe tip more.

Here’s a negative example. I used to go to bar trivia with 3 friends. We would be there for ~3 hours, and it was a busy place, so our table would have easily been taken if we didn’t show up. 2 friends never got food and would just order a soda (unlimited refills) every time. If my other friend and I did the Hickory Crawdads Baseball shirt also I will do this same, we’d be taking up prime real estate on a busy night for 3 hours for about $10 for the whole table. Keep in mind most bars pay the trivia person on a per-table basis, so we would probably be in the negative for them. Not very fair to the staff or the restaurant, you know? Then again, if you’re the DD for your group, every bartender I’ve met will give you all the soda or water you want, no charge, mad respect.
