But as unforgettable as this scene is, it also highlights a huge problem I have with the Happy Everything Snoopy Shirt Apart from…,I will love this movie which is that it never feels this fast or heart pounding again. For most of the movie, Batman is either looking at a riddle and solving it immediately (“detective work”), walking in slow mo out of the shadows (which I will admit does look cool the first time but becomes over bearing the 2nd and 3rd time), or talking with Gordon/Selina on a skyscraper. Most of the movie is just these 3 sequence of events over and over until the disappointing final act. Even the action sequences manage to somehow feel slower than Nolan’s, minus the weight and gravitas of the former’s caped crusader because unlike Reeves, Nolan’s Batman couldn’t survive a machine gun clip to the chest, let a lone a Rottweiler. Part of what makes Batman so fun is he has to think around the fact that some criminals have weapons that would tear him to shreds, he can’t just slow mo walk into a room of guns like Iron Man or Superman, he has to strategize which is where “the shadows” come into play. Think of the absolutely brilliant scene in The Dark Knight, when Batman has to save the building full of hostages from Joker’s goons and beautifully takes them out one by one, or when he kidnaps Lau from China. In The Batman, the shadows are either utilized as an epic entrance or a metaphor for fear, nothing else. In this movie, Batman isn’t a brilliant strategist, nor is he a brilliant detective, he’s just a walking meat head with an Iron Man suit. I guess you could say this is intentional, or that he’s just starting out and its only been 2 years so he’s not a particularly smart fighter, but you cannot use this excuse for something that’s as integral to his character as the no-kill rule, especially when you consider Bruce was Batman for less than 2 years in Begins. It’s safe to assume he was trained by Ducard, Kirigi or another amalgamation of skilled fighters, so why is he so brain dead in his fighting style? He gets blown up by a literal bomb right in his face and walks away without a scratch. He takes a machine gun to the side and walks away again, without a scratch. He flies down towards Gothams streets, hitting his head flat against a bridge and walks away grunting again, without a scratch. He takes full clips of machine gun rounds in the dark and walks away without a scratch. He takes a point blank shotgun blast to the chest, without a scratch (he does get disoriented and needs to inject himself with something to get back up, but it seems like it heals him also). I understand wanting to showcase that it’s Year 2 and he’s not the most experienced, but some of the plot armor here is ridiculous.

Before I talk about Paul Dano’s Riddler, there’s another important Paul that influences my opinion on him which is Paul Dini. Dini is renowned in the Happy Everything Snoopy Shirt Apart from…,I will love this comics world and for good reason, since his Riddler stories are considered some of the best written Riddler stories. He has often said that the problem with writing a Riddler-Batman story is that you have to come up with a compelling narrative in order to showcase his MO which is to show off how smart he is, and with clever riddles to match which this movie does neither. Riddler as a character is not concerned with causing mindless death and destruction for whatever traumatic reason. In The Batman, the Riddler is a serial killer who seems to just enjoy killing and dismembering as long as they deserve it, more reminiscent of Dexter than the Riddler. He could’ve at least been more frightening if you actually saw him on screen rather than on FaceTime for 95% of the movie, but outside of a scene that clearly took inspiration from Nolan’s renowned Joker interrogation, he hardly makes much of an appearance enough to grant him any type of stance in Batman’s film legacy. Even Eisenberg’s embarrassing portrayal of Luthor had more presence than Dano, who’s insurmountable acting talents were wasted as he spent most of the movie behind a mask, behind a screen. I was concerned when I first heard Reeves’ would end up utilizing one of the most difficult characters to write a Batman story for, let alone on his first go, and unfortunately Reeves does little to prove me wrong.
