Every country taxes foreign capital gains (at least the Happiness Is Being A Great Grandma Gnome shirt and I will buy this ones that have capital gains tax, looking at you Switzerland). This is not a unique to the US thing. 877A just makes it so you can’t get around that rule. And it only applies if you have >$600k in gains. To be fair, you still get benefits of being a US citizen when living elsewhere. You get voting rights, and you can receive social security and disability. The US government also works to protect the rights and security of their expats. And you are free to return at any time and use the infrastructure paid for by taxes. If you are permanently leaving the US and no longer want to pay taxes to it, it’s only fair that you give up your citizenship. My only concern is the high cost of renouncing your citizenship.

Happiness Is Being A Great Grandma Gnome shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

If you don’t want to pay taxes and you dont want to live there, why on earth should you ahve to pay for teh privilege of not living in America? Every country provides those benefits to their overseas citizens. No one else taxes their foreign earnings on overseas citizens. Very few of them. US overseas benefits are way, way worse than many who do not have this restriction basically nobody else in the Happiness Is Being A Great Grandma Gnome shirt and I will buy this world does this for a reason, it’s a stupid policy. I can’t think of a country that doesn’t let you vote just because you’re living abroad, so that’s not really special that the US lets you vote I can’t think of a country that doesn’t let you vote just because you’re living abroad, so that’s not really special that the US lets you vote I’m an Irish emigrant, we can’t vote from abroad. That said, all of those other benefits remain with me despite not paying (or filing) tax to my country of birth. Interestingly as a permanent resident of the US, despite not being a citizen I’m required to file taxes for several years if I leave. Our ballots don’t even have to be postmarked till election day. When’s the last time they held up announcing the president so that they could count overseas votes first?
