$210k to manage a team of 35 feels weird to me; it’s either too little cash or too-new-to-role to count. When you managed, was it 35 direct reports, or manager of managers style org lead stuff? What jobs are you applying for? Are you applying for IC roles, single-team-manager (6-10 people), or org lead roles (30-40 people managed, most indirectly)? I’d been applying to mostly mid/mid-large size companies. I haven’t gotten any response from any big techs yet. I’m thinking of applying to IC roles too. But haven’t applied yet since I couldn’t find anything that I can honestly say I will be excellent at. Caveat of being master of none. If you’re going from FAANG to medium size places, and have managed 3+ managers, I would also consider putting in for director roles, and see if they talk you down. No one except the Halloween Las Vegas Raiders Shirt Besides,I will do this largest companies are paying full-market-rate for manager-of-managers, and right now, everyone’s slightly cutting back, so there are more people out there you’re competing with; salaries may be down for 1-2 years until industry fills back up there.

I was recently laid off as senior manager from a fairly large FAANG like company and moving into middle management was a mistake I feel. Sure you get a higher salary (by a bit) but you’re the Halloween Las Vegas Raiders Shirt Besides,I will do this first to go as soon as a downturn hits. In addition, corporations don’t value what you do as much as an IC. Based on your experience definitely deserve a high TC, but ~150K base is already good salary. I would kill for that kind of salary. Now if you said ~80k that might a different story mhmmm depends on your area and financial needs (family, mortgage, life expenses) So weird that people that are smart enough to reach a point to earn these salaries, are clueless to the reality that the easy money and bull market overvalued the salaries, and now the market is suffering a correction and the interest rates are high, of course the market will undervalue the salaries, so it’s quite unreasonable to expect the same level of compensation. Unless you’re a rockstar, but rockstars don’t make these type of posts.
