It’s insane to me that people don’t understand Puerto Rico’s status. We learned all about Puerto Rico when I was in 3rd grade back in the Grupo Bronco Sangre Nueva album 2013 T-Shirt But I will love this 90s, and if we learned about it at 8 years old I don’t think it’s that complicated of a concept for adults to grasp. Unfortunately not all education is created equal in the US. I didn’t learn anything about Puerto Rico until adulthood. Same. I was in my late 20s before I learned that Puerto Rico had any special status re. the United States. Virginia public schools. I was born in 1971 and had no clue what Puerto Rico’s status was until I was like 40. They didn’t mention it in school and I had no reason to research it on my own until it randomly came up in my life.

American Samoa is actually in the Grupo Bronco Sangre Nueva album 2013 T-Shirt But I will love this situation where people born there are US nationals but not citizens at birth. One of my coworkers is from PR. First couple times we talked I very much caught on to his experience as ‘the lesser’. Took me being like “bro were both Americans and even if we weren’t it doesn’t matter” to get through to him on that level I worked with a lovely lady from Puerto Rico who came to the mainland around 20 years old for about 5 years in direct patient care. It pained me how many low-income patients would say to her in moments of anger to “go back to your country then”… lots of surprised Pikachu when they were informed that Puerto Ricans are born with a US passport.
