It was mandatory. This year we finished on time, still taking the “late” lunch and were able to leave at 5, though you were allowed to stay til 6 if you wanted an extra hour.

Earlier in the year after the opposite time change we all left at normal time after a 7 hour shift because we had finished super early. As a firefighter, we just work it and don’t get paid extra. They claim it evens out over a career since you’ll work a spring ahead sometime. This is just how my place does it, every place is different. I used to work 12 hour shifts. On the time change mornings, you either worked 11 hours, 12 hours (going home an hour “early”), or 13. I’ve only worked a couple places where this happened, but I usually had to work that extra hour (which I got paid for), and also the boss let all of us on that shift pick a shift later that week to leave early (but I also got paid for that hour, too). Kind of a small “thank you” for being a good sport about it. I work in Logistics, and was working the night of the time change, in the midst of a dispatch where about 40 truck drivers come in within a 2-hour window. The drivers who were at the facility got an extra hour to load up, while the ones who hadn’t arrived had an extra hour before they arrived. It made what’s usually a crazy time (especially on Saturday night/early Sunday morning) a little easier.
