Not-related cousin though.. He is 22 and I’m 26. But we got introduced in the Get rich or get rekt shirt so you should to go to store and get this context of family by my grandma, since she re-married a man during war where he is a cousin from, where his family is also married into this family I havent been to Vietnam in 14 years and was born outside of Vietnam so I was excited to meet family I never met before in the young adult stage I’m in, now with the will to understand my culture. So after 6 weeks of my mom and me receiving help from him with coming by with taxi’s, booking hotels, driving me to places and inviting him on family trips, I came back from Vietnam to receive texts from him on the daily. (PS i lied to everyone having a boyfriend to avoid being matched up) Normally I don’t even text my friends daily and rather just meet up in real life but because I considered him as family, I thought it was fun that someone from back home was actually curious about my life abroad. Also this way I could stay involved with family back home, ask questions about Vietnam and practice my Vietnamese. He also texted my mom a lot, even more than I do, since I already moved out years ago. Where my mom also just thought it was a cousin who was interested in our life. To be honest I had a hard time keeping up with the frequency of him texting me, but still replied when I could. After 3 weeks of texting I noticed him being more than just interested. He started saying that he missed me, and I need to come back to VN soon to go do fun stuff with him, that I need to take responsibility because he missed me so much, that I should stop with school and just move to Vietnam so he could go have fun with me and said he wanted his em bé back. He said we also might even be soulmates. I tried to talk to him less when it started to happen. At some point I got so uncomfortable and said that he should stop. I noticed he just saw it as a joke so I said ‘if you keep going like this we need to get you a girlfriend’ and he was like ‘why cant you be my girlfriend?’ where I immediately said no. He asked why and I said this is so weird because we’re family. After trying to stay friendly and texting him way less, saying I’m busy, I noticed him being more emotionally attached and unhinged trough the days, where I also forgot his birthday so he started messaging me even more. This went on for a few more days of me trying to take distance, where I ended up sending a message that I find it hard to be in contact because his attitude towards me made me extremely uncomfortable because I approached him as family, where he saw me as an option to be his girlfriend who is responsible for his joy. Which put every interaction we had in a weird context, since me and my mom trusted him as family. He started throwing a tantrum trough texts about him not having friends, that he really wants me as his friend, trying to call me, I stopped replying after explaining why I don’t want to be in contact anymore and feeling denied in my discomfort. Since I still go to school and have my own life around that, I didn’t check my phone after communicating my boundary. So I was shocked to see he went on for 7 hours straight sending me texts and trying to call. It was so weird cause he really tried to shape the situation in a way for me to stay friends and not to be weirded out by his comments, to not see him as family but as a friend, how he always tried to protect me as an older brother, how he just wants a friend, that he is just a crazy sometimes making emotional decisions and he makes jokes like this to a lot of girls. I blocked him eventually.

I’m sharing this story because I feel so confused by the Get rich or get rekt shirt so you should to go to store and get this whole situation. At first I was so happy to meet family, the next moment I have to block him like he is some random mentally unstable guy trying to put claim on me. Is it normal to have non-related cousins to see eachother in a romantic way in Vietnam? I tried to keep the question small but the whole situation got me all on edge, knowing that if this can happen within family structures, what will happen outside of it? What happens if I want to go out and make friends, but end up in situations like this…? I feel like western guys have more of a ‘thank you, next’ attitude where viet guys who did approach me…. i dont know, I’m just shaken by the whole cousin confessing to me thing and am looking for some perspective. Is it okay that I blocked him? Should I give a more clear explanation of how weirded out I am? Is it actually valid for me to be weirded out by this? Are Viet men in general problematic like this? There must be a language barrier too, but our conversations were mainly in English since he is some business IT guy who also has to communicate with internationals sometimes and my Vietnamese is too broken. Its not like our family is close enough to meet up on the regular so its really possible to avoid him now I told my mom, grandma and an actually blood related cousin about this.Vietnamese family has a strict rule about this so dont worry about that. If he is serious, you can just say no. And no othet family member would support him.
