There are a lot of species of tree that are commonly used in urban planning that are not only invasive but actively disruptive to the lifecycles of wildlife. Although there is no way it would ever be bright enough to matter. These trees would be useful for outlining a driveway outside the city, but in a city? They would be drowned out by the light coming from apartment windows alone. It isn’t practical or effective, but at least it’ll contribute to the post-apocalypse aesthetic. Maybe they can get some glowy butterflies and fungi next.

In preliminary calculations, you figure that a glowing tree that covers about 1,000 square feet would cast as much light as a streetlight. Sure they are ugly, but they could be beautiful. It is just went a city needs to install 10,000 of the a functional objects, aesthetics isn’t exactly to of mind. Money is. The streetlights in Lyme Regis are wonderful. That’s on the Jurassic Coast, the beach is littered with fossils, including the ammonites depicted on the lamp. Ignoring the elements of practicality, I imagine it would be hard to get plants to match the energy output of a streetlight. I think the respiration process in plants needs it to be dark to work properly and release energy. Being lit up all the time would probably not be healthy long term for the plant.
