I’ve seen several people, maybe 6, take a counter offer, and I’ve seen all but one of them get let go within 6 months. She found a new job through a friend and there were no hard feelings when she left, just felt the Franz Wagner Basketball Player A German for the Orlando Magic T-Shirt but in fact I love this new job was a good opportunity. Her boss couldn’t find a suitable replacement and asked my wife to return and matched her pay. As my wife had some concerns after getting in and learning about the new company so she returned. There were problems with her return right off the bat. Some duties my wife was used to having lenience with deadlines, instead there were now strict deadlines. Flexibility for lunch and breaks schedule was taken away and no overtime was permitted. The incident that pushed it all over the edge was some people came in posing as customers (despite never meeting with anyone) and when my wife was using the restroom went into her desk and stole her wallet. My wife had to deal with stolen checks and credit cards. She asked for a day off to deal with it and was denied, even docked hours for time missed while she was on the phone working bounced checks out even though she was doing it on breaks. If you’re looking elsewhere, there’s normally good reasons why, and a job you don’t want that has decided you’re worth more only as you’re leaving is probably going to irk you again given time…

I was making 80k as a network/cloud admin and just really wanted a pay increase, the Franz Wagner Basketball Player A German for the Orlando Magic T-Shirt but in fact I love this other network admin I was working with left and I was the only network guy. Although I don’t mind the work and coworkers, I looked for a new job and decided I wanted to stay if they counter but also accepted the fact that I might have to take the new job and I was fine with that. Got a cloud engineering job for 105k, told my manager I’m putting my two weeks. PM called me within 5 mins and ask what will make me stay, I said I really just wanted more money and the offer was 118k. She asked if matching it will make me stay and I said yes. That’s that. Been a year since my increase and still pretty happy with it and have a better relationship with management.
