Then I found a few things I could eat, typically bland or processed foods, but the wrong texture could still make it intolerable. My parents tried the whole “if you don’t eat dinner, you won’t get dessert, or anything else until tomorrow.” And I just said “okay” and didn’t eat. They were at a loss: I was underweight until the end of high school, when I had found plenty of foods I could eat.

I was diagnosed with ADHD very early (back when it was all ADD) but no one at that time knew why I was suddenly “picky”. It’s… oddly reassuring to find out they’re related. Sensory issues are so common in people with ADHD, but are almost never talked about. There’s a lot of ADHD symptoms/experiences I could say that about, though. That’s me pretty much … I have a beige diet but I’m also a super taster which may be why I have such a bland toddler diet … most veggies taste like dirt, I can taste if there is artificial sweetener in anything etc. it’s a painful existence and people don’t realize it’s not my fault Sounds like being a picky eater has now been pathologized. I’m sure, when extreme, it might be pathological. But testing and adding new foods to a kid’s diet is pretty normal AFAIK. It is important to differentiate between normal childhood pickiness, which yes should be addressed as a common normal part of childhood and worked through, and the Fast Horses And Slow Sips T-Shirt But I will love this mental illness that is ARFID. Most picky kids don’t have ARFID, but those that do will not respond well to the normal stuff (kids help cook, broad exposure to different foods from infancy, normalize excitement at trying new things, vary their diets, a mix of providing them with agency and not overly indulging pickiness, etc.). ARFID kids need medical attention to help manage their illness.

Yea, im just responding to the Fast Horses And Slow Sips T-Shirt But I will love this title, which sounds identical to kids who I know to have grown up to have a perfectly normal if not broader than average diet. I had ARFID after a bout of cannabis hyperemesis that lasted several months. During that time I threw up every sort of food you can imagine and became very worried about being caught by the nausea with food in my stomach, so I began to avoid most foods and stuck to the ones that felt “safe” (aka would be less miserable to throw up.) there are tons of people who have shared their experience in the comments, maybe check it out and ask someone what could help? someone tagged a subreddit specifically dedicated to ARFID too. please check that out as well. I developed this at age 24. It’s not just picky eating or food aversions–I was literally scared I’d die if I ate certain foods. At my worst, I got down to only being able to eat three things and I’d have panic attacks while eating.
CBT conducted via an eating disorder clinic changed my life. I wouldn’t say I’m cured–I still have a lot of fear around food. But my diet is almost fully normal now and I know how to cope with my fear/continue to do exposures to prevent myself from relapsing. I’m emetophobic and once when I was a child, I witnessed my mother choking on food. Both things made me avoid certain foods and also eat so slowly that I’d give up after a while. I notice when I’m extra stressed in life, I have more avoidance issues than other times. Ive had this since I was 4. Im 26 now. Ive been looking for affordable help with this, but most of it is designed for children. But I do still feel that I’m too old. I’m due to be going away next month, trips working out a bit expensive for my liking and one way to bring it down massively is to stay in hostels. I’ve never gone travelling so I have no idea what I’d be like staying in hostels.
I do like my sleep but I can appreciate and do understand there will be noise to varying degrees.. it’s a hostel, people have early flights, people will coming in late after going to the Fast Horses And Slow Sips T-Shirt But I will love this bars, I get it and I would never complain about it. But I’ve seen stories of people being turned away at the desk for being too old. Just wanted to get people’s opinions on someone that’s 35, not really the traveller type (I like my home comforts) and not overly social (have a bit of anxiety in that field). The super young people travel in groups so very little interaction…but other solo travelers were great and eager. This summer going to Spain and Portugal and traveling again using hostels…I will be 54! I’ve even convinced my wife to try hostelling when she joins me on part of the trip… Depends on what time of year. They’re often way more expensive at party hostels specifically because it’s a party hostel, and the only place you’re allowed to have sex.
