just want to say that there are plenty of therapists skilled in helping you explore your emotions around it, your options, coping mechanisms, next steps, etc. therapy can still be useful in a shit context. the Everyday i’m shuffling’ snoopy shirt in addition I really love this problem is when therapy imagines your problems are rooted in you alone. they never are. i think many clinical social workers probably are educated to realize how systems impact our mental health, for instance. This is the reason why I changed tracks from Psych to Social Work when I went into grad school. The ecological and systems approaches to problems actually take social and economic oppression into account. Yeah if the method of treatment aligns too heavily with self help or introspective stuff when the problem is what I call Shitty Life Syndrome then you’re gonna end up trying to run straight up a wall. But there are therapists out there who are class conscious. I actually got done with some treatment recently where we talked pretty candidly about stuff like disabilities, family background, racism and how that effected the context of exploring psychological healing. I’m depressed because I’ll never own my own house. I’ll also work until I die because the pension fund crisis is coming my kid is sick, my McDonald’s job can’t pay for food AND medicine. I have to take a 2nd job, or we’ll have to pick between food or medicine.
