Usually this is for waist/hip differences. Some brands use a 10” difference, some 8”, and some sporty brands it’s even less. (Menswear uses a 6” difference.) Curvy vs standard cuts for the same brand will usually have larger waist-hip differences and one would hope that includes the thigh.

As someone who is 40 something I would say try pants on at different stores. I think you’ve confirmed my hunch that these aren’t going to work for me. I’ll continue my search and not bother with slash pockets. I gave up on Gap years ago, and unfortunately, Chicos is still too tight in the thigh for everything I’ve tried so far. But aside from JCP, Kohls, and Macy’s, the only other places we have are Chicos, Loft, JCrew (poorly stocked and with unhelpful employees, unfortunately) and WHBM (where they tend to try to stuff me in things that don’t fit “buy for your smallest part, everything else will stretch!” Anyone need a pair of Size 2 pants with the seam ripped apart at the butt??) I digress. Anyway; this will be an online buy-and-return fest.
