The fucks a mallard supposed to do for your guests so they can have a peak at the biggest serial rapist in the animal kingdom before they get smacked in the head? I’m lost. So now people just hit their head while admiring the duck. Or they hit their head while thinking about what the duck means or why it’s there. I personally would just look at the duck and think, “hmmmm, a duck. Or is it that other word for ducks? What’s are those called again?” I love how it’s hung high enough to encourage people to focus on it as they walk down, and naturally look up at it, and then hit their chin, lol. Maybe consider hanging it slightly above the actual hazard. It would be so funny if you’d paint a ridiculous sneer and side eye on the duck so it almost guarantees that they would at least be too distracted to duck until it was too late. Whoever built your stairs probably put have should head height into consideration, as there is a minimum head height allowance Dude! I did the same thing at the family camp, and everyone either thought it was dumb, or they just didn’t get it. I was beyond disappointed when they took it down.

My Mom did this at her house when I was younger. Oh my god. My grandpa had almost the exact same painting on a super low hanging area over the stairs going into the basement. Decades later, I finally got the joke because of this reddit post. I have the same angled overhead ceiling in my stairwell. The angle is there to meet the minimum code requirement for the height above the stair tread directly beneath it. It doesn’t exactly bode well for tall people though. I was considering putting one of those padded toddler-proof foam edge things, but this has inspired me to explore alternative solutions. Edit: I am 6’2” (1.88 m) and can easily pass through without hitting my head, unless I am sprinting down the stairs in a rush. But I do have friends that are taller than me, so it is an issue. The house was built in 1989, and the code hasn’t changed since in that respect.
