There are so many stories of overweight women being refused treatment for underlying conditions that make it difficult or impossible to exercise or lose weight, UNTIL they lose weight first. A common first line recommendation a lot of doctors give to women who are overweight who suffer from POTS (a common under diagnosed condition among women), EDS (another often undiagnosed condition among women), or MECFS (you get the Engineer Solving Problems You Didn’t Know You Had Understand T-Shirt and by the same token and drift by now surely). All of these conditions make exercise extremely difficult or impossible, or downright dangerous, even sometimes worsening the existing condition. They won’t help treat the condition until the patient loses weight, but the condition is making it impossible to lose weight.

I sound exactly like that person you described. I cannot eat what I want or I will gain weight in an instant, even being a marathon runner. It feels so unfair. Being heavy isn’t always a “choice” per se. Genetics, family upbringing/culture, economic status, education, addiction, sedentary work, trauma, health issues, medication, mental health, time available, age, all can play factors that affect someone’s weight or appearance of weight. Some people just store weight different, too, and can look big in some areas that seem fat. What might be obvious and easy for you can be exceptionally difficult for others for various reasons beyond, “just put down the Engineer Solving Problems You Didn’t Know You Had Understand T-Shirt and by the same token and snacks and get off the couch.” No doubt a fair amount of people have that capability to lose weight and the tools to do so. Morbidly obese is not a healthy way to live. And we can make generally make choices to improve our situations. But there are more than enough stories of people going through some fucked up shit that led them to that where I’m like, “not my place to judge or condemn, just offer help if asked. Me losing 30 lbs is gonna be a whole different ballgame of just sleep/nutrition/gym than them losing 30 lbs requiring them to confront a lot of really hard trauma.”
