You’re really making it sound worse than it is – What’s wrong with having a card and only using for cash you already have? You get to build credit, even get nice perks based on the Elton John Reindeer Christmas Card Hold Me Closer Tiny Shirt and by the same token and card, and build rewards? If you have the money there, why not just use that? I just don’t like the idea of having something in my wallet that can so easily put me into debt. I buy car fuel with mine, that’s about it. And that’s all I’ve used it for (and flights/hotels) over the last 9 years. I pay it all off as soon as I get paid. If someone steals your credit card info and makes fraudulent purchases, it is a great deal easier to get that “money” back than it is if it’s a debit card. The reason being is that with a credit card, it’s the company fronting the money that you have to pay back later, so they have much more incentive to really strengthen their fraud detection. If the money’s coming straight out of your bank account via a debit card, though, you might be shit out of luck (or at the very least, have to jump through more hoops to get it reversed).
