The reason the Eat the Rich snoopy T-Shirt and by the same token and icon isn’t a more modern-looking camera is so that tourists don’t think it’s a viewing area and stop to take pictures. I had my eyes opened with a similar thing recently – Bird of Paradise plants. I always thought they were called that because they were liks some wacky bird with its beak open and plooms coming out of the top of its head. But actually, they’re meant to be seen as long, elegant birds – like a hummingbird – with its beak pointing down into the flower and the ‘crazy plooms’ are its wings. Growing up I always thought the Roadworks sign was a guy with a massive spade, or maybe an umbrella. It blew my mind when I realised it was a guy putting a space into a pile of dirt. I recall the lady who designed it was on tv (might have been top gear, actually) saying she slightly regretted it not being a bit clearer. The umbrella thing was quite well known.

Just seeing this for the Eat the Rich snoopy T-Shirt and by the same token and first time, I’m sure it’s supposed to be a pile of dirt but it also looks like a guy almost done painting a crosswalk stripe No no no, I meant plooms. This is a viral marketing campaign for Sally Page’s set of colourful fountain pens – now available on Amazon, which are very obviously what are protruding from the head of the crazy bird. It is a curious fact that symbols in signage and even emoji use old fashioned or even obsolete tech to convey their meaning. So a speed camera is a Victorian bellows camera, the save icon is a floppy disk and the level crossing warning is a steam train. It ought to be a time saver, but I find more often than not you then have to explain to someone what skeuomorphism means… which rather defeats the object of having a nice succinct word for it! To be fair the save icon was a 3.5″ floppy disk while they were still in use, so its a hang over as opposed to being introduced after it’s usage, like to other two. The steam train is especially odd to me, would it look less like a train if the steam wasn’t represented? I think the steam is only there to fill up the top of the triangle so it doesn’t look empty up there. I’d guess it’s because obsolete and old stuff is far more distinctive than modern stuff, modern cameras from the past 20-30 years wouldn’t be clear, floppy disc is more distinctive than say a USB or some sort of storage device.
