Its going to be one of the best connected cities in the UK. Literally had the best five years of my life studying and living in Birmingham. So I disagree a lot. I think k the vibe is great. Probably a number of factors… lockdown really hurt a lot of small businesses, and small, independent businesses like shops, restaurants etc. are (in my humble opinion) what gives a city its soul: they reflect the history, culture and diverse nature of a big city, and when they vanish, cities become more anonymous, with only chain places that can be found anywhere in the world left. Add in that online retail is really taking a big chunk of shops’ business nowadays, and shops feel even more pain. The big spike in inflation doesn’t help shops, restaurants and bars’ trade either. Like I said, it’s local, independent places that make cities’ identity, and with a lot of those lost due to a host of factors, cities are experiencing a sea change in trading circumstances.

One can only hope that new ones that still keep the Duncan Hills Coffee Nathan Shirt and I will buy this soul of our cities (UK and overseas) will rise from the ashes, because if they don’t, we face a very beige, anonymous future where any city could be any other, and that doesn’t benefit anyone at all. It might interest you to know that Brum has an absolutely cracking independent food scene- some have been there for decades, some are a lot newer. DDC which use to run every weekend in Digbeth, (now on tour), has helped provide a platform for a lot of local independents allowing them to gain a following and then after a while a decent number of them have open their own restaurants- outfits like Baked in Brick, OPM etc all started there. The thing is though that non-locals or locals even who don’t know people obsessed with food is that they won’t know they exist! Most independents in Brum are small places, so they don’t seat a lot of people nor are they big enough to have large group dinners (or even do bookings). But the good places will have almost like a dedicated following so they are busy and typically you do have to wait a while for a table-so not really the sort of place you’d typically go to as a visitor. They also don’t really advertise, and you normally would find out about somewhere new by word of mouth.
