Living in an expensive suburb my mom could never quite grasp why I was never able to save any money and was only ever “just getting by”. It was the only way I was buying anything halfway decent. The disparity is obvious to me but she was blissfully unaware of how good her circumstances really were. I’ve since moved to a smaller city, sold my condo, and bought a house I can afford without being house poor. My parents are thinking of moving too and would get easily double what they paid for their home and my mom keeps saying, “but we won’t be able to get something in this area at the same price”. That’s accurate, but again shows me she doesn’t understand how things work. They could afford a 700-800k home with what they will make on the house they have paid off as the down payment, plus what they have been able to save over the course of twenty years on two incomes plus a pension. They could take out a mortgage on 100k for 15 years and that would be the worst of it. Sorry mom, but I really don’t feel bad for you.

He is 84 and his wife 85 He wanted me to help him create a job posting for a live in nurse, not only to help with medical needs but also chores around the house and shopping. Everything was going ok writing up , he wasn’t being demanding or anything. When I asked him what he would be willing to pay, I was floored. Now… I live in Japan, got here in 98. He’s lived here (American, retired Vet and Civil Servant) since 1962. Way back then what he has in his head would have been a good salary, but he was only willing to pay $1500 / month. He got annoyed with me when I started laughing. I asked him, so, you want a live in Nurse that also cooks and cleans and goes shopping 1500 bucks a month. I told him what that position usually makes here and he damn near fainted. I told him he’ll never find someone for that little, he insisted I lost it. He’s still confused why no one has taken him oluo on his ‘ generous’ offer. It’s been a year not a single reply. He is actually a very nice man and I do help him as often as I can even if it’s just listening to him tell his stories. It’s not mean spirited for him, he genuinely believes that’s a great salary, It’s just that age that can’t figure out that everything has gone up in price. They have no frame of reference.
