Travel is about just doing what you want and hopefully contributing to the local areas you visit. I’m not OP, but when she talks about portrayals in TV shows, the only one I can think of is Bob Hearts Abishola. And while that show exploits some stereotypes for comedic effect, it’s hardly a negative portrayal. I think there’s a good middle ground between seeing the world and not touching places that don’t need to be touched by outsiders. Like most countries in Africa should be seen solely to disparage the idea that Africa is some backwater. But also a lot of areas shouldn’t be touched as they’re trying to grow in their own, and tourism money can be a double edge sword. People who don’t travel much, especially internationally, have this idea that everywhere that isn’t America, Canada, and Europe is a dangerous hellscape. Before moving to Cambodia, the amount of incredulous shit I got was a trip. I’ve lived in several states and many cities during several decades of life in America and never felt as safe as I do in Siem Reap. People largely don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about and it doesn’t help when some idiots like to drum up fearmongering based on extremely rare incidents.

And unfortunately go by what they see in media. It’s also interesting how media portrays some countries only in a certain light to westerners. Assuming you’re from the US, a lot of people here probably can’t point to Nigeria on a map. Lots of people in the US are scared of traveling anywhere outside the country let alone to low or middle income countries. It’s sad, but actually getting out and seeing places for yourself is admirable. Dont take travel advice from people who don’t travel. Very true. I’m Australian. But still the same stigmas here.
