Paying that much also motivates brain drain in our favor, i.e., all the Don’t let the old man in Toby Keith American country music singer T-Shirt But I will love this best professionally trained doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. are willing to relocate to America in order to make that much money, both to provide themselves with a better standard of living and sending excess money back home via remittances. because we get taxed to the gills unless we’re lucky enough to cross over into elite status. On top of the taxes the governments (federal, state, and local) we have to pay out of pocket for everything and pay sales tax on it. Health insurance comes out of our salary as does the cost of using that insurance at a doctors. I have one kid in not-fancy preschool that costs me $18,000/year. but the Don’t let the old man in Toby Keith American country music singer T-Shirt But I will love this real kick in the pants are exorbitant medical bills. Depending on what insurance you have, meaning how much your employer is willing to spend on your healthcare, you can go bankrupt for one little hospital stay. My son spent a night in the ICU over the summer and because we have great insurance, our bill was ~$500. The charge for the bed and the IV bag of sugar water and the bag of potassium water was ~$10,000 which was covered by the insurance company’s negotiated rate and the generous coverage. But all of that was on my partner’s insurance. If our kids were on the insurance offered through my job, my monthly premium would be ~$1000 and my out-of-pocket would have been a ~$2700. I know I’m in a fortunate situation now and it sickens me that others have to struggle with this crap. I remember the days of not being able to afford a trip to the ER while passing kidney stones and hate that in this “rich” nation people still have to choose between debilitating pain and eating for week.
