So you grab the Do you have a Piglet Mindset 2023 shirt it is in the first place but hammer, smash the tube, and the latch springs back (as the broken tube is no longer holding it forward in the locked position). They are meant to be, my company decided they were too expensive so had our fitters fabricate them ourselves, only realised they’d forgotten the springs when the building was on fire and the doors wouldn’t open…. That was a fun shift. The tube is clearly broken on the right side. The bolt is clearly back. And OP is an idiot if they took the picture on their way out The BS is not, however, the law. It’s the expected standard but it is written by industry experts and not by legislators. IIRC the Regulatory Reform Order is much more broad in its wording – I think it just says something along the lines of, any locked or secured exit must be able to be easily unlocked and opened in the event of a fire. This is a difficult one as compliance with the law e.g. health and safety at work act would require doing what’s reasonably practicable… compliance with a standard would help demonstrate this. Indeed, the company would have to prove it was practicable to have followed the standard. When that comes down to ordering the right stickers, that is not going to be an easy point to argue. As a firefighter – you 100% did the Do you have a Piglet Mindset 2023 shirt it is in the first place but right thing, unless it was a pre planned that you are made aware of always treat it as a real emergency, fires don’t wait around for anyone.. get out stay out We had a fire alarm at 5am in my second week in uni halls. My room was right next to the fire doors that were alarmed and had big signs saying “Emergency Use Only”. Fire alarm goes off, I’m up out of bed, chuck a dressing gown on, out and down the fire escape in about 20 seconds. Going through the fire door set off the door alarm so that’s now blaring as well as the main fire alarm. Turns out it was a fire drill – they did it so early to make sure we’d all be in – obviously we only found that out later and thought it was a real alarm at the time. They could turn off the main alarm but not the door alarms – had to wait for an engineer to come out at 9am to turn off the door alarm. The people who lived in my building and couldn’t get back to sleep because of the noise from the continuous door alarm were pissed off with me (which I guess I understand) but so were the halls staff (which is totally unreasonable). They said I was “supposed to” come out of the building the long way round (i.e. along the corridor, down the main stairs and out the front door) so they could then tell me that was the wrong thing to do and I should use the fire escape instead… Apparently they didn’t actually plan for anyone to think to use the fire escape on that first drill. Idiots.
