I’m white (but half Mexican), people I work with are racist af but think I would fit in. The same people (we work in the Disney Peter Pan Neverland window shirt and by the same token and same place) tell my dad to go back to his own country and worse often. I’m also Hispanic with a Caucasian glazing, asking them to explain the joke is very fun. The trick is to keep a big smile plastering on your face like you’re waiting to be amused any moment. I had a neighbor make a racist comment to me and it completely went over my head. I was distracted at the moment and replied to her “there goes the neighborhood” type comment with a genuine, completely unrelated response. I then asked her to repeat and she said “nothing, I’m just being a silly old lady.” It wasn’t until about twenty minutes later that I fit all the pieces together and was like, WTF! She has never said anything like that to me again.

When I have asked them to repeat what they have said, they are often happy to do so because they don’t even think they are being racist or not the Disney Peter Pan Neverland window shirt and by the same token and “bad type” of racist I usually say something or ask them something that makes them look very stupid, but they don’t get it, like Jordan Klepper on the Daily Show when he interviews Trumpers. One of my friends often finds himself in similar situations. Because of his job and hobbies (investment banking, gym, football, biking) he often finds himself amongst misogynistic bros who assume he’d be cool with ‘locker room’ talk. It’s incredible the stuff bigots feel comfortable saying if they think they’re amongst ‘their people.’ Unsurprisingly he hasn’t revealed that he’s gay to any of them. Pretty much everyone assumes I’m a racist & homophobe meanwhile I just treat everyone like I want to be treated. I hate that those assholes have validated the redneck stereotype.
