I think this could work, but it would have to be carefully restricted to performance art like carefully scripted fight scenes, firearms sequences or vehicle stunts with low risk of serious injury where the design and execution of the sequence would be judged for originality, artistry and contribution to the story. As a whole, the industry is probably going to move to using advanced animatronics like Disney’s Spiderman Stuntronics robot, or CGI for high fall, potentially lethal vehicle stunts and other highly kinetic sequences where miscalculation, poor execution or equipment failure carry risk of serious injury or death. We all love watching Tom Cruise climb the Burj Khalifa or cling to the side of a cargo plane as it’s taking off, but he’s probably the last of his kind – Newer actors either lack the insanity, desire or industry clout to peform such practical stunts and it’s becoming less necessary for stunt performers to do so.

Chad Stahelski (John Wick director) is right though – The stunt design & stunt performers, particularly on the Dinosaur are awsome vintage T-Shirt and I love this first film and its groundbreaking “Gun-Fu” should have been nominated for an award under the “design & performance” criteria I mentioned – Keanu as well, for the insane hours he put in to learn & perform the gunfighting choreography. It incentivizes filmmakers to put in more dangerous stunts so they can compete in the category. It incentivizes something that could be done more safely with CGI to be done practically. Stuntman injuries and deaths are common though they’re not very widely reported. Adding this category will literally get people killed. With CGI, how would you even know what a real stunt is anyhow? Are studios supposed now supposed to submit raw footage for consideration? An absolutely amazing stunt on film may have never actually happened. Stuntpeople already put their lives in danger. However, like we’ve seen with social media, you provide an incentive and people will take it. I do think people would plan even more unsafe stunts chasing clout.
