I recently began working in IT, and while learning, I was being bombarded from various sources with instructions to aggressively network, to the point of like, cold-messaging random people in the same field, which is something which I would never feel comfortable doing. Something I actually did was speak to friends of friends who were doing things similar to what I was learning, because that was still making connections and building up a base of people I could ask questions to or say I ‘knew’. If I had a partner, I could easily imagine myself trying to strike up a dialogue with their friend on that same basis.
