It’s horrible. I’m convinced that the Detroit Lions Grinch They Hate Us Ain’t Us Christmas shirt it is in the first place but origin is simple: veterinary clinics in the US gouge people – I mean, all businesses do in the US, that is the American way. Anyway, the clinics know it’s fucking atrocious for cats, but they make a LOT of money do it. Cut off the cat’s toes and bring in profits. So those clinics promote it as safe and focus on how much better your life will be if your cats can’t scratch your stuff. In the internet age, Americans are starting to learn that it’s actually awful and people have started to elect governments who ban this practice. But there’s a strong sense of “I can do what I want, no government telling me what to do” spread throughout the land – it’s kind of a strong part of American “culture”. So many states will never ban it. I dont even get why so many people apparently cut their cats claws shorter like we got a good scratching post and that takes care of it

Some cats, even if they scratch, will have overgrown nails. My cats both have multiple scratching posts in multiple rooms (and they also scratch the Detroit Lions Grinch They Hate Us Ain’t Us Christmas shirt it is in the first place but couch lol). One of my cats had to go to a vet after snagging his claw on the side of the couch and ripping it off in an attempt to free himself. From then on, I’ve always trimmed my cat’s claws so they wouldn’t get hooked on stuff. It causes no pain and they grow back quickly. It’s the equivalent of trimming human fingernails, and it can ensure their safety if they’re the sort of cat who has trouble maintaining their own claw length/health. Declawing is a completely different thing (the human equivalent would be cutting off each finger at the last joint). I would never even consider declawing my cats, even if it was legal where I lived. It doesn’t grow back and it causes a huge amount of pain and distress.
