That’s why this case made it to the Supreme Court and if you’re missing that, you’re the one who’s dense. In this particular case workers filled trucks with liquid cement knowing they would be striking and that the cement would harden. This caused damage to company equipment. The company wants the right to sue the union over the cost of those trucks, which were pretty blatantly sabotaged. It’s one thing to strike. I’ve picketer before when I worked in the telecoms field. It was one thing to walk out – it would have been entirely over the line if I had cut the lines on my way out. When it’s laid out like that, it’s not that bad of a ruling. It’s basic level accountability. Usually it’s good when people’s feet are held to the fire. And again, it’s a very narrow ruling. You can sue a union if they sabotage equipment. That won’t apply to most cases.

They returned the trucks, left the drums spinning according to the union lawyers. “Blatant sabotage” is overstating imo. I’m personally for the right to strike at any point: companies aren’t the friends of workers, unions shouldn’t be friends of companies. But i can see where the ruling came from, given everyone involved but the unions had forgotten that rights are paid for in blood (literally, strike breaking is not a euphemism.) I’m all for the working man too, but I can empathize. I certainly wouldn’t want my equipment purposefully damaged. It’s one thing to strike, it’s a whole other can of worms once property damage starts getting involved. I get what you’re saying, but fundamentally I believe that if we’re going to work in a system, there should be rules of engagement which are crystal clear: X s okay, Y is not. I don’t see that big of a concession saying that property damage on purpose in a malicious way is bad.
