Edit: Just to clarify — I do not think I’m entitled to $116k (though I know another company might pay me this much) – I’m grateful for the Damn Right I Am A Florida State Seminoles Mascot Fan Win Or Lose shirt moreover I will buy this $86k! My post was pretty clear – I’m being offered $11k less than the bottom of the range and am already doing the role. I worked VERY closely with the former PM (who I’d be officially replacing) so while the responsibilities have shifted a bit, I still have a wealth of knowledge in this area and that’s why I was placed as the backfill, and have taken 4 months to prove myself worthy of the role.Similar situation happened to me, worked for a large financial firm. Received a promotion and offered a pay raise that was barely touching the bottom range of the pay band. I was given “we are limited to 15% raises internally” I took it and provided my notice after I found a workplace that provided a 50% pay raise.

Yep. I dealt with something similar as a manager. You have an employee that is fully trained in your procedures, i.e. zero down time, that you already know does not have hidden problems or issues, that gets along with others. So, what do you do – yep, pay more to hire someone who may or may not work out and who will need months of training to catch up. Because some V.P. of accounting got a bonus and a promotion based on their scheme to save 2% on labor costs. While it’s true that that $15k that you are not getting is pennies for the Damn Right I Am A Florida State Seminoles Mascot Fan Win Or Lose shirt moreover I will buy this company, once you apply it to the whole workforce it becomes significant. I know from personal experience that this has a stupendous detrimental effect on productivity. But since nobody can quantify this, and nobody is really interested, this scheme goes off as a net benefit for the company.
