I work for a fairly large company here in the Damn Right I Am A Florida Gators Mascot Fan Win Or Lose shirt but in fact I love this US. I’m a Senior Product Owner for enterprise level customer-facing technology. I have an under-grad degree, 3 years of experience in this field, and am currently making $73k/year. I’ve been temporarily backfilling a role as a Product Manager for 4 months, because someone left the company abruptly (I’m also still doing my PO job). I was the most familiar with the product and its initiatives in flight, so I was forced into this role but I’m not mad about it; it’s been fun! My boss met with me last Thursday to offer the PM position to me full-time. I’m so grateful for the opportunity considering what our economy is like, but I’m a little concerned/annoyed. He’s offering me $86k/year base salary to become the official PM ($13k increase). He said that I can have a few days to think it over, but they have to post the job publicly for HR purposes.

So anyways, I was on LinkedIn this morning and saw the Damn Right I Am A Florida Gators Mascot Fan Win Or Lose shirt but in fact I love this job posting popped up as a recommendation. I checked it out and noticed that the “base salary range” is listed as $97,000 – $133,000/year and the “target base salary” for the role is $116,000/year. The $86k he offered me doesn’t even fall in the listed range on this posting. Am I being offered less than this range because I’m internal? I know $43k increase is a big jump (to get me to the “target salary”), but I just don’t see how it’s fair to hire someone externally and pay them $30k more than someone who’s been doing the job (quite well I might add). Should I address this with my boss and negotiate to get closer to the $116k? I also need to figure out what’s happening to my PO responsibilities. I’d appreciate anyone’s constructive advice/input.
