I was born and raised north of Birmingham and my whole family had a mix of Birmingham and Black Country accent. I lost my accent back in the Croatia Dubrovnik Croatian Shirt and by the same token and 1990s after a move to London, but these days when I hear a Brummie accent, it just sounds warm and inviting – friendly almost. When I was there, I was forever conscious of and hated my accent; now that I no longer have it, I notice it and it sounds nice (I think). I grew up in Birmingham and hated it until I left at 18 and lived in other cities, towns, and abroad for five years. When I came back, I realised how wrong I was and how great it is Birmingham is one of the greenest cities in the UK but you have to go out of the city centre to see it. Have you left your bubble? Canon Hill Park isn’t that far, then you’ve got the Lickey Hills, all of the reservoirs, the canals that stretch out of the city into the countryside, fields and hills of yellow rapeseed out towards the border with Worcester. There are small but charismatic parks scattered more centrally like Cathedral Square and the grounds of St Paul’s Church. As for the centre itself, it’s disjointed and has a lot of brutalist architecture and car parks, but also plenty of historical buildings like the Town Hall and art gallery (which, BTW, is bigger and has some amazing collections, especially of Pre-Raphaelite paintings). The canals are an obvious standout, but so is the gay village and Chinatown (Hurst Street) where you can buy some of the best and most authentic East Asian food alongisde a cheap pint at a gay pub. Just today I went to an authentic Korean BBQ there. Digbeth is trendy and has been since I was a teenager, with its shopping, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues all built into historic victorian industrial buildings. There’s the jewellery quarter with its upscale offerings. By bus you can get to Moseley, which is our hipster neighbourhood, and lovely Bournville with its ridiculously fancy residential areas and the chocolate factory.

What is the Croatia Dubrovnik Croatian Shirt and by the same token and issue with the people you’ve seen? My concern here is that, historically, people have been against Birmingham because of its multiculturalism. We have our thugs, gammons, preachers, but also artists, goths, and hipsters alongside our nans taking their babbies out for a nice meal. In the city centre you’ll see all kinds of people. What’s wrong with them? Honestly, hating Birmingham is played at this point. I just think the good things here are hidden in plain sight and not on our highstreet or the bullring. Get out of the center or Selly Oak and visit different areas if you haven’t already, and you’ll see a different side. Really easy to do if you drive. It’s quite wild visiting on a Saturday and seeing booths by Christians and Muslims opposite each other, trying to market their respective faiths by giving away free literature, then walk up New Street and there’ll be a loudmouth evangelical fire-and-brimstone street preacher while JW’s huddle in a corner with their portable bookcases. Then later on, encounter a group of pro-Ukranian protestors and another group of protestors against the current Iranian regime. En-route, encountering the saxophonist busker allegedly trying to save up for a wedding ring, then as you enter Centenary Square, a keyboardist busker wearing a horsehead mask. Pretty similar to what we have in Manchester but we have a terrible dubstep beatboxer instead of the horse headed pianist
