I do NOT know how anyone else is surviving. I live way below my means. Even with paying $1400 a month in student loans for nearly a decade I kept saving (it’s just 280 a month now). I had the Cowboys Dallas Star classic shirt it is in the first place but foresight and paranoia to scrimp on lots of things in favor of hoarding money (for example, I bought my very first bed frame when I was 28. My mattress was on the ground till then because it wasn’t truly a necessary expense) out of fear of this happening to me. This fear drove a LOT of hard work to get myself into a place where I’m fortunate enough to have been able to save this much money. I have been stuffing money into my 401k since I got my first permanent role in my mid-20s so if ABSOLUTELY necessary, I can at least dip into that.

Computers and other technological advancements certainly gave us more entertainment, but entertainment is but a fraction of what makes life worth living. The truth is, we should feel grateful if we have a safety net of friends and family to fall back on in case catastrophe strikes. And still, if a catastrophe strikes you’re possibly all going to be in the same boat. Katrina was a wake-up call to my family. This country just did not give a fuck about us. 2008, 2014, 2020… I’m supposed to be retired now, but I can’t possibly withdraw my retirement right now, all my investments are in the shitter. The only saving grace for me is I’m 6yrs from retirement from the navy. Pension is okay but damn I’m terrified of what the job market is going to be like. a lot of the homes here are fancy and people drive nice cars too, but there is usually nothing in the inside, they spend all their money on the things you can see from the street view. I was struggling hard before I made a budget and realized how much I was wasting on stupid shit I didn’t really need
